About Me

I’ve been lucky enough to have lived in some of the most beautiful areas of England, including amongst the undulating hills of the Cotswolds, the fells of Lancashire, and near the rugged coast of Cornwall, before my family settled in Suffolk, on the banks of the River Stour. I still live and work in Suffolk today.

I studied Print, Design & Planning at college. I became particularly interested in typography and hand lettering, including calligraphy and the art of illumination.

I love the flow and elegance of using a dip pen and ink and often use one in my art today, it feels at once contemporary and ancient.

My first creative employment after college was a magical job making wizards in a Pottery. This had little to do with print and design but it was a fantastic job and I enjoyed using clay to create 3D form. At the same time, I used my design and lettering skills to paint signage for local companies.

At 19 I left the pottery to go traveling, which had been my dream from a very young age. The desire to travel has remained with me and has also been a great source of inspiration.

Skipping forward, I ended up running a signwriting business for several years. I moved from that into graphic design when the joy of working up a ladder in winter wore off, plus a broken foot from falling off said ladder was a persuasive factor in that decision.

I’ve had no formal art training although I have always loved and created art. In 2018 I enrolled in a weekly watercolour class. From the art I produced and the connections I made there, I was asked to exhibit in ‘The Sudbury Art Fair’.  I sold successfully which gave me the confidence to focus more on my art practice, and in 2019 I decided to follow my true vocation to become an artist.

Exhibitions and opportunities I have participated in since then:
2019 May – Cockfield Community Art Show
2019 The Sudbury Summer Art Fair – St Peters Chruch
2019 Beyond Plastics Exhibition – The Minories in Colchester.

Artists Statement

I am a mixed media artist, working predominantly with watercolour,  pen, and charcoal.

As an artist, I appreciate colour and greyscale equally and enjoy the diversity of using both in my art practice. I’m experimenting with combining charcoal, colour, and other mediums such as gold leaf, which is proving to be an enjoyable challenge. I feel there is much I can do with this and I look forward to sharing the results.

I draw influence from my love of travel as well as my local surroundings, so my subjects are diverse. The subject often determines the materials I will use. I believe that one inspires the other and helps to keep my art practice fresh and unpredictable.

I find as much beauty in a decaying piece of rusting metal as I do in the natural landscape. The patterns, textures, and colours, that surround us, from a splash of graffiti to the way someone walks, a smell, or an overheard sentence, can inspire a painting in me.

The challenge and sheer joy of turning these ideas into original artwork is my driving force.
